Foi institu\u00eddo em 1965 e desde ent\u00e3o \u00e9 feriado nacional. Tiradentes lutou contra o poder da coroa portuguesa e foi um alferes (cargo militar da \u00e9poca colonial). Deu-se ent\u00e3o a Inconfid\u00eancia Mineira. Todos os inconfidentes foram banidos e Tiradentes foi enforcado no dia 21 de abril e teve seu corpo foi esquartejado e sua cabe\u00e7a exibida em pra\u00e7a p\u00fablica de Ouro Preto. Tudo foi feito ao som de discursos que louvavam a Rainha de Portugal.
